Congregation Beth Israel, founded in 1854, was the first Jewish Congregation in Texas.
News was received in Houston of the death of Mr. Edward [sic] Scharff at Ft. Worth on Sunday. He came to Houston from Brenham about eight years ago. He had formerly been a merchant and land owner of Louisiana but retired from active business pursuits before coming here. His only relative in this country is the son who was formerly a student in the State University but who is now a sergeant at Camp Bowie.
Mr. Scharff was a retired merchant and capitalist and resided at the Lonoma Apartments. Mr. Scharff was a member of the Congregation Beth Israel, Houston Lodge, I.O.B.B., and the Mason and Elk Lodges in Houston.
Mr. Scharff was a man who did much good. There was never a worthy cause that sought his support in vain. He was about 65 years old. (this is unlear) His remains will be sent to St. Louis for cremation.
Eduard Scharff’s passport application of 7 May 1894 stated his birth date was 11 January 1857 in Rhine Pfalz, Germany (he’d have been 60 at time of death). Whereas his November 1917 death certificate showed his date of birth as 1 July 1856 (he’d have been 61 at time of death).
