Other Ancestry.com family trees have traced the Taliaferro line back to the 1500s; I will not be typing all those generations at one sitting.  In Italian, ‘taliaferro’ means ‘iron cutter’. The family emigrated to Virginia before the Revolutionary War. The Taliaferro name is prominent in Virginia. It’s also spelled Talifero,Tellifero Tolliver, or Toliver. The family settled in Virginia in the 17th Century. (see Wikipedia)

The surname is thought to trace back to Bartholomew Taliaferro (b. 1530 in Venice – d. 1601 in London) who was ‘made a denizen (of London) in 1562’. Bartholomew Tailaferrro was an 8X great grandfather of Velma Pauline Taliaferro and her siblings, Carl Eugene Taliaferro, Clarice D. Taliaferro, Wilburn Doyle Tailaferro, Estelle E. Taliaferro and Oma O. Taliaferro.

There’s a legend the name originated in Cisalpine Gaul in Roman time and this leads some to believe origins were in France. However, the term Gaul applied to a wide area which also included Northern Italy. The Taliaferro name is common today in Northeastern Italy, near Venice.
