I am sorry to say that neither the artist Col. James O. Burnley nor any of the officers he sketched other than Col. Pethick were part of the Hd. Qtrs Co., 1142 Combat Engineers. Someone has misinterpreted Col. Burnley’s memoirs. He may have served with Col Pethick and the others in another Company that Pethick ran prior to his promotion to head the 1142d Combat Engr Gp but not at Camp Crowder nor did any of them serve with Pethick and us overseas.
None of Burnley’s men are listed on the roster of the 1142d except Pethick. I personally worked for Pethick in S-3 Operations from Nov 1943 -Aug 1945 and knew all of the officers. Please check the roster and photos of the men and officers listed in my memoir in the 1142d Combatengineers.com site. Also, I contacted the 6 remaining members of the 1142d and they concur with me that a mistake has been made. They also never heard of any of the officers sketched other than Col. Pethick.
Nick D——
Nick, thank you very much. I added edited this post and added another one splitting the sketches story from a brief history of the 1142nd.
I hid your name for privacy.

Gary,
my grandson EYAL is the son of my son Natan Sxxxxxxx and my daughter-in -law EYNAT.
1. my MOTHER’S grandma was FRAGA FRODEL GHERTNER, she died two weeks before I was born, so one of my names is Fraga (forest strawberry).
2. my father Isaia Iancovici was a journalist and an editor, he worked by night to repair the mistakes, so his grand-daughter xxxx (our daughter) is also an editor at Yediot Aharonot – the most popular israeli newspaper.
3. Ithac Grinberg is the father of Boris Grinberg and Ania Grinberg. Herman Ciuraru Horenstein was the brother of Puica Frema Ciuraru (my mother).
4. Gary, please enter in GENI and write ACCEPT in my mother’s item so you can fix the mistake. (I am trying)
the 3rd picure: Rashela (wife of Moritz) and Anuta Ciuraru/b. Ghertner, DAUGHTER of Smil Ghertner and Fraga/Frodel Cucosh.
Gary, this is a great blog! I can’t wait to forward it to my family. I’ve always been the family historian in my small Ghertner clan, but as the older generations have passed on, I’m sure I’ve lost some valuable data. I’d love to see the family tree that you’ve compiled, maybe you or I can provide each other with a few missing links as I am convinced that the very few Ghertner clans across America are all related. Feel free to e-mail me.
Oscar Ghertner was born in 1905.
Smil Leib Ghertner was in fact Smil Arie Ghertner and they called him FATER (FATHER in Idish). And Frodel was called MUTER.
There is another Smil-Leib Ghertner in our family, I’ll wrote about him later.
Everything is very well described, except the name of my grandfather: Natan CIURARU. THANK YOU.
Terrific news for you, Mazel Tov!
.. and priceless facts to have. I’ve save the names and date elsewhere because I’m paranoid about privacy of living individuals.
Corina,Thank you so much.
I have saved the name & birth date of Moritz & Rashela’s daughter in my family tree and on my computer; but this blog is ‘wide open’ and I prefer private information not appear on the blog.
Moritz married Rashela Ghertner and they had a boy Arnold/Arolica and a girl xxxxx xxxxxxx/Ghertner, she was born in the same day with my mother (xx/xx/1925) and is still living in Israel, she has two children, 5 grandchildren and 3 grandgrandchildren.
Once again, thanks. Your information is invaluable.
Hi Gary,
1. In the picture you called “Smil Leib Ghertner & Fraga Frodel (Cucosh), the two persons are my grandparents Natan Ciuraru (Horenstein)and Anutza (Hana) Ciuraru, parents of my mother Frema Iancovici (Ciuraru).
On the wall it is a picture of Anutza’s father “Fater Schmil” (Leib Ghertner) who was a “soifer” (idish) or “sofer stam” (Hebrew), his occupation was to write Thora (the Bible).
2. There were two persons named Anutza (Hana/Ana was a common name in Romania): one is my grandmother Anutza Ciuraru (Ghertner), wife of Natan and sister of Oscar and Avram and the second is Anutza Ghertner (Meirovici), wife of Oscar Ghertner and mother of Benny.
3.I have a new grandson!, child of my daughter & son-in-law, born on 20/02/2012, sorry I can not add him in my legacy tree because of our problem…

Yes, bottle rockets at the building, cherry bombs flying around, I don’t remember the eggnog but my grandfather, Lewis Sr. had his own spiked version.

Thanks for the compliment Corina.
Gary
Good job, Gary!

a 6’5″ ghertner!!? that would change everything :)
Possibly, however Leonard’s brother, Gerald was tall, as is one of Gerald’s children. I’d always wondered where that gene came from.
I had the name Struel Ghertner already in the tree, along with Simon’s other sibilings:Chunach, Hanoch, Isak, Shlim, and one without a name; but I can only suspect the source of that information was my uncle Alven.
